Song of the Shirt

I have been busy developing work inspired by a film made in 1979 called "The Song of the Shirt" This film explored the lives of women working in the sweated clothes trade in the 1840's and made some links with sweatshop garment manufacture in the 1970's. For us watching it today the film still has relevance with the conditions of garment workers in places like Bangladesh.
The work consists of a series of garments on which have been stitched drawings of people sewing.
These garments will be hung at the Sunlight Centre in Gillingham Kent as part of the Medway Open Studios event, which runs from Monday 20th to Saturday 26th of July. The Sunlight Centre used to be a laundry, which was another inspiration for the work.
The open evening will be on Thursday 23rd July from 7pm -9pm.
See you all there!
